Laptop for a programmer, which one to choose??

Are you a programmer, make sure to have these parts in your new laptop.
  • SSD: this is must, 256GB at least. Sure, who use HDD any more? SSD boosts your speed dramatically on EVERYTHING, not just boot time, not just copying files, everything. Get one with NVMe if you can, it is much faster than SATA-3, it can reach 3500MB/s .
  • Has at least 16GB of memory. You will never have enough RAM, and it is cheap now, so why not?
  • Good built. You use your laptop a lot, bring it many places. Do not buy cheap, low quality built laptop, even the if the specs is great. You will regret sooner or later when the parts fall apart after just a slight drop.
  • Weight. Seriously, not many people pay attention on this but you and your laptops are like one single being. Don’t carry a 4kg Alienware around.
Those are just something worth noting. There are many other factors, such as each preference or bias to consider. Therefore, basically there is no such thing as the best laptop for everybody.
Don’t choose machine based solely on brand, they all have good and bad ones. Like Apple, you cannot working with a shitty keyboard and 1 port on the 12″ version Macbook; or any Thinkpad other than X, T and P series. I once worked in a team where there are 5 different brands: Acer, HP, Thinkpad, Apple, Dell… and all of us are happy with it.
If you still cannot choose one, there are some worthy laptops on the market at the moment, and prepare to spend some money, they worth it:
  • Macbook Pro: Sure the top choice for most engineer. The built is the best, battery is astounding good, MacOS is good compromise between Linux and Windows. Even if you don’t like MacOS, it still works great on Windows or Linux.
  • Dell XPS 13/15: Great design and built quality. I loved it at the first look. The InfinigyEdge screen is very sexy. It also works great on Linux or Windows. For me this is the best laptop in both design and built, after the Macbook.
  • Thinkpad T series, or X1 carbon: Thinkpad are always top choice for programmer, no more need to say. It’s just what do you prefer: More toughness and battery capacity of the T series or the light-weight, thin Ultrabook X series. Your choice.
